For the majority of Traditions, Beltaine is the time where the Lord and Lady get jiggy and conceive the child that will be born later in the year. However, for my Trad, that jigginess occurred back at the Spring Equinox (which I somehow managed to forget to write a post about, this year) and there is no offspring. Instead Beltaine is the first day of Summer, when Freya takes over for Woden (allowing him to get a nap in) and brings forth greenery in full force.
FYI: Those “adult” jokes that are often made about the Maypole really aren’t off the mark. The pole is phallic, and dancing around it was/is part of a fertility ritual performed in hope to encourage a blessing from the Gods for bountiful harvests.
